The University began to provide professional education in architecture in 1950. In 1975 it introduced a building programme, which later developed into the current surveying programme. The Faculty of Architecture was established in 1984, replacing the former School of Architecture, to provide professional education in both architecture and surveying.

The HKU Faculty of Dentistry is unique in Hong Kong for dental education and is considered to be the premier centre for postgraduate dental education and training in Southeast Asia.

The Faculty of Education (the Faculty) was established in The University of Hong Kong in 1984, having previously been a department in the Faculty of Arts and then a School of Education. The University of Hong Kong's Medical Faculty is the oldest faculty in tertiary-education in Hong Kong. The Faculty of Social Sciences was established in 1967, and has undergone rapid expansion and significant transformation since.
